The Hepatitis B Network, guided by Dr. Claudia Hawkins, aims to tackle significant research gaps in sub-Saharan Africa regarding Hepatitis B prevention and care. Launched with funding from the Robert J. Havey Institute for Global Health, the African Hepatitis B/HIV-HBV Co-infection Clinical Research Network (AHBCRN) will conduct multi-site studies that recognize the 65 million individuals living with chronic Hepatitis B in the region. The focus is to elevate Hepatitis B on the global health agenda, which has historically been overshadowed by other infectious diseases.
"Hepatitis B has not been a priority for the global health agenda until recently, partly because of the priority placed on other infections such as HIV, TB and Malaria where complications of the infection occur sooner and are more 'visible.'"
"To bring much needed attention to Hepatitis B, specifically to the estimated 65 million people living with chronic hepatitis B virus (CHB) in sub-Saharan Africa, the team uses their research to address specific aims."
