German man likely cured of HIV after stem cell transplant in first-of-its kind case
Briefly

What scientists found "extremely surprising" in this case was the man appeared to be cured "even though the stem cell donor was not immune to the HIV virus," said HIV expert Prof. Christian Gaebler...
"The virus-free observation period of more than five years now indicates that the HIV virus has actually been completely removed from the patient's body," said Professor Olaf Penack...
"In previous cases of remission following stem cell transplants, the stem cell donors had two copies of the CCR5-delta32 mutation, which hampers HIV's ability to infect cells."
International AIDS Society President Sharon Lewin said at a briefing that the research "suggests that we can broaden the donor pool for these kinds of cases," per NBC News.
