FDA renews debate over biased pulse oximeters

There's growing evidence that the devices don't reliably detect low oxygen levels in Black patients, resulting in delayed care, missed diagnoses of hypoxemia and possibly worse outcomes.
With no consensus on the best way to assess skin pigmentation for medical device development, the FDA is proposing updated standards for clinical studies to "promote a more inclusive and representative" patient population.
