Martin Elling, a former partner at McKinsey & Co, pleaded guilty to obstructing justice by destroying records related to consulting work for Purdue Pharma on OxyContin sales.
Elling faces up to a year in prison, having accepted responsibility for actions that contributed to the opioid crisis and ensuing investigations into Purdue Pharma.
Acting US attorney Zachary Lee emphasized that today's guilty plea holds not just corporations accountable for the opioid crisis, but also individual executives like Elling.
The case drew attention to the wider impact of Purdue Pharma's marketing and prescriptions, which have been linked to nearly 727,000 opioid overdose deaths in the US.
