Doctors hail first breakthrough in asthma and COPD treatment in 50 years
Briefly

Doctors have hailed a new treatment for serious asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease attacks, marking the first breakthrough in 50 years, which could transform patient care.
The trial found that benralizumab, a monoclonal antibody targeting eosinophils, effectively reduces lung inflammation and can significantly cut the need for further treatment.
Lead investigator Prof Mona Bafadhel emphasized that despite advancements, treatment for asthma and COPD exacerbations had remained unchanged for five decades, underlining the significance of this trial.
About 50% of asthma attacks and 30% of COPD attacks are eosinophilic exacerbations, making benralizumab a potentially gamechanging solution for a significant segment of patients.
