Discovery and engineering of the antibody response to a prominent skin commensal
Briefly

The skin colonist Staphylococcus epidermidis not only triggers a CD8+ T cell response but also elicits a significant and sustained antibody response, suggesting it plays a crucial role in pre-emptive immunity.
Our research with S. epidermidis cell-wall mutants indicates that the surface protein Aap is a major target for inducing specific antibody responses, highlighting its therapeutic potential.
In experiments with mice, replacing the parallel -helix domain of Aap with a fragment of tetanus toxin produced a strong neutralizing antibody response, demonstrating novel ways to enhance immune responses.
