SANTA CRUZ County public health officials are raising alarms about xylazine, a potent animal sedative increasingly found in street opioids, leading to higher overdose risks.
Dr. Lisa Hernandez warned that xylazine mixed with fentanyl, known as tranq dope, is particularly dangerous because naloxone cannot reverse xylazine poisoning.
Mixing xylazine with opioids like fentanyl enhances the effects but also significantly increases health risks, including serious skin wounds, infections, and the potential for overdose.
Health officials urge the community to avoid street drugs, recognize the signs of overdose, and take immediate action, including administering naloxone when necessary.
