Advanced dementia patients may briefly regain memory months they die
Briefly

The new study revealed that a number of patients see their memory briefly return more than six months before they die, suggesting various types of lucid episodes not always signaling impending death.
Lucidity episodes can be triggered by external stimuli like the presence of a loved one or music, indicating different triggers and not all pointing towards nearing death.
Nearly 20% of caregivers noted lucid episodes within seven days of death, with over a third reporting death a week to six months after the episode, while almost 48% lived more than six months after the episode.
Unhabitual visits by family may trigger these lucid responses, or family and friends not used to the patient's routine cognitive fluctuations may pay closer attention, according to the researchers.
