What happened to the Dart Center at Columbia? - Poynter
"Starting today I'm leading the Global Center for Journalism and Trauma, a new, independent nonprofit championing trauma-aware reporting and advancing the resilience of news professionals worldwide,"
"The Dart Center, where I've hung my hat for the last quarter-century, has sunset at Columbia Journalism School."
"The Global Center, Shapiro's post continued, would continue with the "same commitments and core team" as the Dart Center."
The Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma operated at Columbia University for more than 15 years, providing journalists resources on ethically reporting on survivors of violence and managing the personal toll of such reporting. Columbia decided to "sunset" the center, and the Dart Center's website became inaccessible. Journalists are facing heightened hostility and stress, including attacks from high levels of power, exacerbating the need for trauma-aware resources. The Dart Center's Facebook page was renamed the Global Center for Journalism and Trauma and a new website preserved the center's resources. Bruce Shapiro announced he will lead the new independent nonprofit, which said it will continue with the same commitments and core team, and noted several funders had agreed to support the venture while the Dart Foundation was not listed. Columbia Journalism School dean Jelani Cobb said the center lost the funding needed to remain at the school.
