The United States has dropped to 64th place in the World Press Freedom Index, a decline of seven spots from the previous year. Reporters Without Borders has noted a consistent downward trend in the U.S. ranking since 2002. Clayton Weimers, executive director of Reporters Without Borders' North America division, criticized the Trump administration for its actions against press freedom, stating that a free press cannot operate under political targeting and legal constraints, which pose increasing risks to journalists.
