The New York Times is creating a team that will experiment with generative AI in its newsroom. The team, led by an editorial director for AI initiatives, will prototype uses of generative AI and other machine learning techniques to aid reporting and improve the reader experience.

While the New York Times is excited to bring AI tools to the company, it is firm in its belief that traditional journalism will still be performed by expert journalists.
