The article discusses the impact of technology on music discovery and youth culture. It highlights a generational shift where younger people primarily find music through TikTok, whereas previous generations had access to magazines, record stores, and MTV as cultural hubs. The author argues that the current music streaming landscape is too corporate and lacks the community feel that platforms like MTV provided. There's a nostalgic urge for a return to those days, where discovering music felt like a richer, more connective experience.
When I grew up, MTV was ground central for youth culture, for better and for worse. I won't pretend it was perfect... but it did have something that these current-day platforms don't.
It seems to me that the people still yearn for an escape, but with few options available, they have no way to articulate it.
Streaming playlists are meant to fill this role, but they feel corporate and strict. YouTube can help, but it's a harder deal.
Younger generations tend to discover songs and artists through TikTok...but to me it made perfect sense.
