In its annual report published yesterday, RTÉ returned a net deficit €9.1m in 2023, attributed to declining TV licence revenues, increased operating costs, and special broadcasts.
The national broadcaster reiterated a criticism of the TV licence mechanism, stating it reflects 'less and less how people consume public service content', suggesting a need for reform.
Simon Harris emphasized that RTÉ must act responsibly and deliver on reforms, highlighting the taxpayers' support through a financing program to stabilize the broadcaster.
The new agreement guarantees RTÉ €42m directly from the government next year, as part of a funding package that lessens the broadcaster's requested amount.
