"What I want for journalists who are entering the field now is managers who understand that their most important job is developing and retaining talent. Great journalists don't become great leaders by osmosis. In this program, we aim to shift our industry's focus from just leading the journalism to leading the journalists - strategically, with empathy and accountability."
"Faculty carefully selected cohort members through multiple rounds of review to ensure diversity across race, ethnicity, geography, platform/medium, organization and organization size, and expertise. The selection process prioritizes a dynamic mix of experience for good reason - alumni join a global network that sustains these connections beyond the timespan of the training."
The Poynter Institute's Leadership Academy for Women welcomes its newest cohort of journalists selected through a competitive, multi-round review process. The program, now in its 11th year, has transformed the careers of almost 700 journalists since 2015. Participants include editorial directors, investigation editors, visual producers, and audience engagement specialists from global news organizations and local newspapers. Academy director Kate Cox, herself a program graduate, emphasizes shifting the industry's focus from leading journalism to leading journalists with strategy, empathy, and accountability. Faculty carefully select cohort members to ensure diversity across race, ethnicity, geography, platform, organization size, and expertise. The program creates lasting impact through a global alumni network that sustains professional connections beyond the training period.
