German broadcaster recalls correspondent over AI-generated images
""The damage caused by disregarding journalistic rules is considerable," ZDF editor-in-chief Bettina Schausten said in a statement. "At its core, this is about the credibility of our reporting.""
""The AI-generated material should not have been used without journalistic justification and without being categorised according to ZDF's internal rules for the use of AI-generated material," the broadcaster said."
"Presenter Dunja Hayali had introduced the segment saying the Trump administration's immigration raids had created "a climate of fear that doesn't even stop at children"."
ZDF recalled New York correspondent Nicola Albrecht after a broadcast segment used internet-sourced video clips, one AI-generated and unlabeled and another showing a 2022 Florida arrest. ZDF said the original February 13 broadcast was accurate but an updated February 15 edition contained the misleading clips. A clip displayed a Sora watermark from OpenAI's short-video generator. Editor-in-chief Bettina Schausten said the breach damaged credibility and violated journalistic rules. ZDF noted internal rules require categorisation and justification for AI material. Past incidents included withdrew pieces allegedly written with generative AI and an AFP finding of an AI-generated image of Nicolas Maduro.
