GBH has announced layoffs affecting 45 employees, which constitutes 6% of its workforce, caused by cuts in federal funding and rising costs. CEO Susan Goldberg emphasized that these decisions are unfortunate but necessary due to evolving audience needs and the challenging financial landscape. This comes in light of broader criticisms against public media, with recent actions from the Trump administration targeting federal funding. Previous layoffs at GBH indicate a troubling trend in public broadcasting, underlining the importance of adapting to current media realities while maintaining commitment to quality programming and community engagement.
"GBH is being impacted by several dynamics at once: federal funding cuts, rising costs of doing business, and the need to evolve our work to meet audiences' needs," she said.
"Layoffs are never our first choice. We're sad to have to say goodbye to colleagues and grateful for their contributions... to ensure long-term sustainability," Goldberg said.
"GBH remains committed to being the most innovative, trusted, and impactful public media organization in America... what will never change is how much we care - about our staff, our audiences, our work, and our community."
