CBS News staffers don't have to respond to Bari Weiss' memo asking about their work, unions say
"I want to understand how you spend your working hours - and, ideally, what you've made (or are making) that you're most proud of,"
"This is an outreach from a new leader who would like to get to know the organization and the employees, and use it as a discussion guide as she meets with employees in the coming weeks and months as time permits."
Bari Weiss requested staff feedback about roles, work hours, and accomplishments and asked employees to reply by a specified deadline. Multiple unions representing CBS News employees, including Writers Guild of America East, SAG-AFTRA, and IBEW, informed members that replying was optional and assured that responses would not be used as grounds for discipline or layoffs. SAG-AFTRA shared a message from CBS Labor Relations describing the outreach as a new leader’s attempt to learn about the organization and to use responses as discussion guides during future meetings. David Ellison appointed Weiss as editor-in-chief after acquiring her startup.
