The lecture was part of the Daniel Pearl Memorial Lecture series organized by UCLA's Burkle Center for International Relations. CBS stated it follows its security team's guidance and is working with the university to reschedule. The Los Angeles Times reported internal opposition at the Burkle Center and an expectation of large student protests; a Burkle Center associate director reportedly threatened to resign if the event were rescheduled. UCLA said it had prepared a comprehensive security plan coordinated with campus safety and external law enforcement.
