ABC News has agreed to pay $15 million to settle a lawsuit after anchor George Stephanopoulos inaccurately stated that Donald Trump had been found civilly liable for rape. The network also plans to post a note of regret on its website and pay $1 million in legal fees to Trump’s attorney. This settlement addresses the fallout from a misrepresentation during a discussion with Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., related to the ongoing legal issues surrounding Trump and writer E. Jean Carroll.
In the lawsuit, Trump challenged Stephanopoulos's assertion that he was found 'liable for rape' during an interview, which he argued mischaracterized the verdicts of the cases brought against him by Carroll. Judge Lewis Kaplan clarified that while Trump was found liable for sexual assault against Carroll, the jury did not conclude that Trump met the legal definition of rape under New York law, distinguishing between legal definition and public perception of the term.
