The Daily Iowan, the student newspaper of the University of Iowa, has purchased two local newspapers in Iowa in order to provide opportunities for student journalists to gain real-world reporting experience. The papers will continue to operate with their current staff and offices and will continue to print weekly editions. This acquisition is part of a larger trend of student journalist-run initiatives to support local news in university communities.
"News-academic partnerships like this one are more important now than ever before as community newspapers reduce staff or close," said Melissa Tully, the school's director.
