Each year, the Time for Kids Kid Reporter program invites applications from aspiring young journalists. Established in 2000, this unique initiative enables children to cover various news topics. Audrey Owolo, a 13-year-old participant, exemplifies the program's impact, having interviewed significant figures at the White House. Despite the high level of interest, only a select number of participants are accepted annually, emphasizing the program's competitive nature. To further support young journalists, a guidebook offering journalism advice was introduced, catering to children eager to learn about the profession.
"I learned that you have to ask good questions, and then you have to be a good listener," Audrey said. "I also learned that I have to make sure all my facts are correct, and I also have to remain curious about the world."
Allison Singer, executive editor of Time for Kids, noted that far more kids are interested in journalism than are chosen, highlighting the competitive nature of the Kid Reporter program.
