The Poynter Institute has updated its AI starter kit for newsrooms, focusing on the ethical use of AI in visual journalism. Alex Mahadevan emphasized the importance of providing clear guidelines for visual teams and the ethical responsibilities of those developing newsroom products. The new framework helps newsrooms navigate the complex challenges AI presents, particularly in visuals, which pose a risk to audience trust. Newsrooms are encouraged to form their policies around their core values, rather than being forced into a one-size-fits-all approach.
"One of the biggest things we heard over the last year was, the editorial guidelines are great, but what do you visual teams do?" said Poynter faculty member Alex Mahadevan.
"The use of visual generative AI tools exposes newsrooms to the most risk in regards to audience trust, and should be discussed in depth at your newsroom."
"It really starts with thinking about what your values are and building the policies around that." said Mahadevan.
"The toolkit doesn't prescribe a newsroom's use of the technology, on visual AI or in other areas."
