Thunderbird plans to introduce paid 'pro' tier services to compete with email giants like Gmail. This will include new features such as custom email addresses (@thundermail.com), an appointment scheduler, file-sharing tools, and AI enhancements known as 'Thunderbird Assist.' Managing director Ryan Sipes shared that while specific pricing and tiers are not yet defined, there will be free and paid options. Thunderbird, originally launched in 2003, struggled against the rise of Gmail, but recent development efforts have revitalized its potential to re-enter the email service market with a focus on open-source values.
"It is our goal to eventually have a similar offering so that a 100 percent open source, freedom-respecting alternative ecosystem is available for those who want it."
"It is my conviction that all of this should have been a part of the Thunderbird universe a decade ago. But it is better late than never."
