Tesla threatened in France with claims of 'deceptive' practices
Briefly

Tesla is facing opposition from France's Competition, Consumer Affairs, and Fraud Control Office, which has accused the automaker of deceptive practices regarding its semi-autonomous driving features. Many critics argue that terms like 'Autopilot' and 'Full Self-Driving' mislead consumers about the actual capabilities of Tesla vehicles. However, Tesla insists it has been clear about the necessity for driver engagement and preparedness. The agency's ongoing investigation may result in significant fines if the company fails to adjust its practices within a stipulated timeframe.
Investigators in the government office said that Tesla has engaged in deceptive commercial practices over the capabilities of its cars.
Tesla has been transparent with consumers and regulatory agencies that its cars are not yet fully autonomous, meaning drivers could sleep, play on their phones, or pay no attention to the road.
Tesla has never maintained that its cars are capable of this. On its website and in its Owner's Manuals, it says that drivers are required to pay attention.
The office began the investigation back in 2023 and, this week, ordered Tesla to comply with regulations within the next four months.
