T-Mobile is set to launch T-Satellite, its Starlink-powered satellite service, on July 23, after successfully completing beta testing. Initially, T-Satellite will offer SMS for Android and iOS, and MMS for Android, with a $10 monthly fee for non-subscribers. T-Mobile has ambitious plans to expand services to include data connectivity in October, collaborating with selected app developers. The approach contrasts with Verizon and AT&T, who have partnered with AST SpaceMobile, but competition continues as they claim T-Mobile's model may impede their efforts.
When it goes live next month, "T-Satellite" will be available as an included service with just one T-Mobile plan - Experience Beyond - and will otherwise cost $10 per month.
T-Mobile's approach to satellite connectivity looks a little different from the competition's. Verizon and AT&T have both partnered with AST SpaceMobile to provide satellite service to customers.
The announcement also names Apple and Google as partners, but doesn't list specific apps from either company. T-Mobile anticipates several app makers enabling satellite data connectivity.
Don't expect to be able to use every app on your phone in a dead zone just yet; there’s a handful of app makers that T-Mobile has in mind.
