Microsoft is testing a 'free with ads' version of Office
Briefly

Microsoft may soon release a free version of Office for Windows that includes popular applications like PowerPoint, Word, and Excel. This version is currently in testing, featuring ads displayed on-screen and restrictions, such as requiring users to store their documents on OneDrive instead of locally. Some features will not be available, including drawing tools in Word and some functions in Excel and PowerPoint. However, Microsoft has confirmed that there are no current plans to officially launch this desktop version.
Microsoft has been conducting some limited testing," a representative for the company told in an email. "Currently, there are no plans to launch a free, ad-supported version of Microsoft Office desktop apps.
The update would allow users to access PowerPoint, Word, Excel and more for free. There appears to be a few conditions for the fee-free option.
