Meta, app makers launch Washington lobby to fight Apple and Google
Briefly

App makers, including Meta, Spotify, and Match Group, are forming a lobbying coalition in response to legal pressures on age verification for minors accessing apps. As public concern rises, they are urging that Apple and Google should take responsibility for these verifications instead of app developers, fearing the implications of costly lawsuits and complex information handling. This coalition, called the Coalition for a Competitive Mobile Experience, also aims to address grievances about unfair practices in app distribution and competition in the mobile ecosystem.
Representatives of Meta, Snap Inc. and other apps argue Apple and Google should be in charge of ensuring minors are blocked from downloading certain apps. Apple and Google, on the other hand, have pushed for developers to take more responsibility for verifying age, citing their existing policies.
The Coalition for a Competitive Mobile Experience also will press app makers' long-simmering grievances that the iPhone and Android platforms and their app stores unfairly discriminate against competing software, app and hardware creators.
