"We are trying to level the playing field a bit - all those people doing, for lack of a better word, over optimization or overly SEO, versus those making great content and a great site."
"We are trying to make GoogleBot smarter, make our relevance better, and we are also looking for those who abuse it, like too many keywords on a page, or exchange way too many links or go well beyond what you normally expect. We have several engineers on my team working on this right now."
Google will apply penalties to websites judged to be over-optimized to prevent unfair advantage in search rankings. The aim is to level the playing field between sites using excessive SEO tactics and sites offering high-quality content and user experiences. Targeted abusive behaviors include keyword stuffing, excessive link exchanges, and other manipulative practices that go beyond normal expectations. Engineering efforts focus on improving GoogleBot and relevance algorithms to detect and penalize such abuse. Several engineers are already assigned to develop these detection methods and refine relevance scoring. Implementation of these penalties could occur within the next month.
