Creators from marginalized groups, including women, queer individuals, and creators of color, increasingly favor Twitch for its strong moderation policies. Joseph "Halfmoonjoe" Birdsong, who identifies as gay, deleted accounts on platforms like X due to their reduced moderation focus, citing safety on Twitch. Other creators echoed similar sentiments, acknowledging the improved trust and safety practices. In contrast, platforms like X and Facebook are deprioritizing moderation, leading creators to feel that Twitch offers a more secure and welcoming environment for streaming, particularly for marginalized identities.
"I feel safer on Twitch than I do on other platforms," Birdsong said.
"There's value in other platforms like YouTube and TikTok for pre-recorded content, but it doesn't feel as worthwhile livestreaming on other platforms when you can barely regulate your chat," said Gappy.
Over the past year, creator platforms such as X and Facebook have explicitly deprioritized content moderation, while Twitch has expanded its moderator tools.
The growing contrast between different creator platforms' approaches to moderation has made some creators in marginalized groups view Twitch as a digital safe haven.
