HillmanTok University has emerged as a grassroots initiative offering free, college-level courses through TikTok. Launched by educators in response to shifting education policies, HillmanTok aims to provide an accessible educational experience reminiscent of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). With over 400 courses available, topics range from herbalism to Black economics. The movement began when a TikTok video by professor Leah Barlow went viral, inspiring many other educators to share their expertise. Users engage with lessons in short video formats or via TikTok Live, creating a vibrant educational community for thousands.
Courses are delivered in TikTok-length bursts, and in longer sessions over TikTok Live, with an audience of about 16,000 registered users on the HillmanTok official website.
HillmanTok is a growing movement with over 400 courses already on offer, all accessible for free, inspired by the HBCU educational experience.
