Train operator Lumo awarded its own officially registered Scottish tartan
"A few weeks ago, a notice quietly appeared on the Scottish Register of Tartans authorising a train company to commission its very own tartan design - the corporate equivalent of being knighted, but in wool. The company in question is low-cost train operator Lumo, which can now officially claim to be the proud owner of an officially official tartan. The design was first shown off last month when Lumo launched its Glasgow-London services,"
"As Lumo's Director of Communications, Richard Salkeld, explains, although the company is based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, it wants its Scottish links to feel authentic and rooted in the communities it serves - so not just a Saltire slapped on a press release. The company also takes a social value approach to local community events, providing practical support beyond the usual slap of a sponsor logo on something."
A notice on the Scottish Register of Tartans authorised low-cost operator Lumo to commission and register a bespoke tartan. Lumo unveiled the design when launching Glasgow–London services and plans to use the tartan as part of its London–Scotland branding. The company aims to make its Scottish links feel authentic and rooted in local communities rather than relying on simple symbols. Lumo pursues a social value approach to events, offering practical support beyond branded sponsorship. Houston Kiltmakers’ Ken Macdonald worked with Lumo managers Gerry Scott and Richard Salkeld to develop the design. Colours, including blues, were chosen to reflect the places its trains run through.
