"It's a six hour trip, and it would have been a big outlay for the club to pay for the players to stay overnight. Sir Alex offered to pay for the players and staff to stay overnight before the Wick game. It's a wonderful gesture, and very much appreciated. The players are totally thrilled."
"He was complimentary about the win against Cowdenbeath - they're a couple of tiers above us, so it was a bit of a shock result. He'd seen the goals and said he hoped he could help us get into the third round. We consider him the greatest football manager"
Benburb FC, a junior side based in Govan, will travel a 600-mile round trip to play Wick in the Scottish Cup second round on 25 October. Sir Alex Ferguson provided funding to cover overnight accommodation in Caithness so the team can rest before the match instead of travelling on game day. Sir Alex grew up watching Benburb with his father and has recently visited the club. Benburb beat Cowdenbeath 2-1 in the first round and a win against Wick would secure a place in the third round, with potential lucrative fourth-round ties against Premiership sides.
