Manchester United sign Sweden's Wangerheim but suffer Toone injury setback
"Matt Johnson, United's director of women's football, told the club's media channels that Wangerheim was one of Europe's best young talents, saying: As a dynamic, invasive and versatile forward Ellen brings variation and a natural scoring instinct to the team. Everyone at the club is excited to have her at Manchester United and the opportunity to help maximise her potential."
"Wangerheim, who helped Hammarby win a league title and the Swedish Cup in 2023, said: I am so excited. It feels amazing to be here. It's a huge club with big history. So sitting here in this shirt is a proud moment for me. It's always been my dream to move abroad and to play in another country, in Europe and in a really big football club."
Ellen Wangerheim, a 21-year-old Sweden forward, has joined Manchester United from Hammarby on a contract running to June 2029. She is the Women's Super League side's third January signing after Hanna Lundkvist and Lea Schuller. United's director of women's football described her as one of Europe's best young talents and praised her dynamic, invasive and versatile attacking qualities with a natural scoring instinct. Wangerheim helped Hammarby to the 2023 league title and Swedish Cup and called the move a proud moment. Schuller and Wangerheim arrive as Rachel Williams and Geyse have departed, while Ella Toone faces at least six weeks out with a hip injury but is expected back before the end of the season.
