Pep Guardiola tells his Manchester City players to stay at home prior to huge Real Madrid tie
"We were in Madrid, travel here, day after here no training, go to London, arrive yesterday at 2.30am, today you cannot do anything because the players who played are still at home and tomorrow we train. We will not have to train something but repetition for the training will take us to Real Madrid."
"We don't have time to train. I prefer them to be at home. We will arrive at 2[pm], move a little on the legs and go. I did it two or three times this season. Sometimes I train, sometimes I say stay at home. We have been together for 11 months with the [Club] World Cup so we know each other quite well."
Manchester City faces Real Madrid in a crucial Champions League last 16 second leg while trailing 3-0 from the first match. Pep Guardiola decided to give his squad an extra rest day at home instead of conducting a training session. The decision came after City traveled from Madrid, played West Ham in the Premier League on Saturday ending in a 1-1 draw, and arrived back early Sunday morning. Guardiola explained the team lacks sufficient time for meaningful training and prefers players to recover at home. He noted the squad knows each other well after 11 months together, making additional tactical work less critical than physical recuperation before the Madrid fixture.
