Pep Guardiola hit with homophobic abuse by Real Madrid fans
Briefly

During a Champions League match on February 19, Manchester City's manager Pep Guardiola was allegedly subjected to homophobic abuse from Real Madrid fans. The fans reportedly began chanting derogatory comments about Guardiola, referencing Chueca, Madrid's gay district. This incident coincides with rising concerns over inclusivity in sports, as highlighted by gay TV presenter Matt Lucas, who reported experiencing anti-gay abuse during matches. Guardiola's recent personal struggles, including his separation from his wife following his contract extension, were also noted, adding context to the abuse he faced.
The chant reportedly included mention of Chueca, an area of Madrid known as the heart of the capital's gay district, although the word used can also mean "crooked" in slang.
According to Spanish publication Marca, Madrid fans began to aim chants at Guardiola... as their side took a two-goal lead on the night.
At the end of last year, gay TV presenter Matt Lucas claimed he had been subjected to anti-gay abuse by football fans before a match "twice so far this season".
Guardiola split from his wife Cristina earlier this year... after he signed a new contract to stay at City until 2027.
