Newcastle controlled much of the first half and created the better chances, including efforts by Wissa and Joelinton. The deadlock broke in the 53rd minute when Doku's cross, Bernardo's touch and Semenyo's finish made it 1-0, and Semenyo doubled the lead from a corner in the 61st minute. The match featured a VAR controversy and followed City's 10-1 FA Cup win over Exeter.
