Mexico City's government announced the upcoming reopening of the Azteca Stadium, set to be called Estadio Ciudad de Mexico, in March 2026. The renovation aims to meet FIFA standards for the 2026 World Cup, featuring new changing rooms and upgraded seating. The stadium will host the opening match on June 11, alongside other tournament matches. This renovation is part of a broader urban regeneration project in Tlalpan, enhancing public infrastructure and mobility, with various fan events planned throughout the city during the World Cup.
"Great projects for a great city, projects that will continue to benefit the population in all aspects, based on the comprehensive mobility plan combined with technology," Brugada told reporters.
The renovated stadium, which hosted the 1970 and 1986 World Cup finals, will kick off next year's tournament with the opening match on June 11.
