""Just wanting to go with the balance of right and left in the lineup," Boone said. "To not be in that situation early where you're just giving them good matchups and you're maybe a little reluctant to fire pinch hitters, especially if they happen to go to [Kevin] Gausman or something, who is that very neutral [splits] guy that I feel like Goldy matches up well with anyway.""

Paul Goldschmidt replaces Ben Rice at first base for Game 4 against opener Louis Varland. Rice is batting .222 in the postseason while Goldschmidt has four singles in eight at-bats. Austin Wells moves up to No. 7 and Ryan McMahon drops to No. 9 as the Yankees alternate left and right hitters throughout the order. Boone said he wanted the balance to avoid giving the Blue Jays favorable matchups and to be less reluctant to use pinch hitters if Toronto turns to Kevin Gausman. Blue Jays manager John Schneider indicated a higher likelihood of using Yesavage. Varland is not expected to go more than an inning.
