The Moon Mammoths? MiLB team to adopt alternate identity following 'Last Week Tonight' contest
Briefly

The Detroit Tigers' Double-A team, the Erie SeaWolves, has been rebranded as the Erie Moon Mammoths. This change was initiated by John Oliver during a segment on HBO’s Last Week Tonight. Oliver invited minor league teams to submit their reasons for rebranding, and Erie stood out with its unique history and whimsical marketing ideas. The name reflects the local significance of woolly mammoth remains found nearby. The team will debut its new identity during specific home games, featuring themed events and special merchandise.
John Oliver devoted a May 4 segment to names and promotions of minor league baseball teams, announcing: 'We are willing to use all of our resources and stupidity to give one Minor League Baseball team a total rebrand.'
Oliver said the northwestern Pennsylvania team had given 11 reasons it should be picked, including that the team had pioneered cotton candy hot dogs and 'The SeaWolves play baseball nowhere near the sea.'
The name was inspired by the 1991 discovery of woolly mammoth remains by George Moon, a Summit Township resident who found a bone while scuba diving.
Oliver announced Sunday that he had chosen to call the team the Moon Mammoths, with a promotional video narrated by sportscaster Bob Costas.
