Stuart Sternberg, owner of the Tampa Bay Rays, stated he is not considering selling the team amidst ongoing stadium negotiations. The franchise faces delays in building a new $1.3 billion stadium, initially agreed upon with St. Petersburg due to hurricanes and funding issues. Delays in bond approval could push the stadium’s readiness to 2029, with the team unable to cover rising construction costs alone and seeking renegotiation for public funding. The final decision on construction benchmarks is looming, with a March 31 deadline approaching.
If it was (for sale), people would know it. I've always been, and I will continue to be, pretty transparent about our intentions. And pretty - not pretty - but very honest about them.
We cannot absorb this increase alone and want to renegotiate with the city and county to solve this funding gap together.
