U.S. attorney Martin Estrada revealed that Shohei Ohtani's former interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, faces bank fraud charges for financing illegal sports betting. Mizuhara allegedly moved over $16MM from Ohtani's account to an illicit sports book.
Mizuhara established the account in 2018 and initiated illegal gambling activities in 2021. Estrada confirmed that the bets were not related to baseball, emphasizing Ohtani's victimhood. Mizuhara deceived the bank by misrepresenting himself as Ohtani.
