Oakmont Country Club, renowned for its difficulty, offers a striking contrast between its inviting clubhouse and the challenging course it hides. As the only course designed by Henry Fownes, it has hosted 10 U.S. Opens, a record in the country. Players are drawn to Oakmont not just for its beauty, but for its rigorous demands, which are amplified during the U.S. Open. Experts like Jeff Hall describe it as extremely stressful to play, emphasizing the physical and mental challenges that players face on its unique layout.
"When you stand on the first tee, 10th tee, 18, 9, you get a layout of the whole property," Jon Rahm said. "You get to see the entirety of it, as beautiful as it is."
"I truly believe that Oakmont is the most stressful place to play a U.S. Open," Jeff Hall, part of four USGA setup teams at Oakmont, said. "The U.S. Open is supposed to be difficult for the right reasons, it's supposed to be challenging."
