MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred expressed a desire to create an in-market streaming bundle by the 2025 season, allowing fans to stream games without blackout restrictions. He hopes to include at least 14 teams in this streaming bundle, offering a direct-to-consumer option.
"Realistically, my target to having a digital package I can take to market would be for the '25 season," the commissioner told reporters.
MLB could potentially work around blackout issues by taking over broadcasts for teams affected by bankruptcies or dropped contracts with regional sports networks. Diamond Sports Group, which has already dropped deals with the Padres and Diamondbacks, is set to carry broadcasts for its remaining 12 teams in 2024. MLB is also handling broadcasts for teams abandoned by AT&T, such as the Rockies, Astros, Pirates, and Mariners.
The Diamond Sports Group bankruptcy provides the clearest avenue... MLB could be able to work around blackout issues for a number of organizations in the relatively near future.
