Gerrit Cole of the New York Yankees has been criticized by free agent Joe Kelly from the Los Angeles Dodgers for not covering first base during a crucial moment in Game 5 of the World Series. Kelly likened Cole’s error to the mistakes of a child's Little League team, saying "even nine-year-olds know to get over to first base." In response, Cole expressed that he is unaware of Kelly’s remarks but is focused on the new season. He acknowledged his mistake during the game, reflecting on his misplay and the situation's impact on the game.
"Knox's 9-year-old travel team ... every single one of them, kids who pitch one inning a week, bro, know how to get over [to first]," said Kelly.
"I don't know him at all ... I don't mind. It's hard for me to (react) with anything of substance, other than I'm really focused on this season," said Cole.
"It wasn't for a lack of effort, I just misplayed the ball ... I was not in a position to cover first. Neither of us were," explained Cole.
"I took a bad angle to the ball. I wasn't sure how hard he hit it. By the time the ball got by me, I was not in a position to cover first," stated Cole.
