"Anthony is going to play an important role in this series," Roberts said before the game. "The way they structure their lineup, just to get him on some lefties makes sense. We've got a chance to pick when to put him on them."
"You know, you just don't know," Roberts said after the game. "Obviously if I knew in hindsight, Schwarber was going to hit a homer - it still got us into the seventh inning. When Emmet came out of the game, we had a two-run lead. I felt we prevented runs up until that point."
"MLB Now analyzes the Dodgers' decision to use Anthony Banda as an opener despite Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper having exceptional splits against left-handed pitchers."
Manager Dave Roberts started left-hander Anthony Banda as an opener to exploit matchups with Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper batting second and third for the Phillies. After Harrison Bader struck out to open, Schwarber homered on an 86.3 mph slider. Harper then walked and Roberts removed Banda, bringing in right-hander Emmet Sheehan. Sheehan recorded 5.2 no-hit innings before allowing a leadoff double in the seventh and being removed. Roberts noted the opener strategy aimed to neutralize lefties and observed the sequence still carried the team into the seventh with a lead.
