The Marlins faced a stroke of bad luck, dropping from a tied 22.5% chance for the top pick to seventh overall in the draft.
"It shows you how much luck is involved in this process, and it doesn't reward you when you go through tough seasons," MLB analyst Dan O'Dowd noted.
The Nationals, who had only an 18% chance, surprisingly landed the top spot, while the Marlins fell short despite stronger odds.
The Marlins are now looking at potential top-10 picks like Cam Cannarella and Jamie Arnold, trying to make the most of the situation.
