MLB suspended A's pitcher Michael Kelly for one year for betting on baseball in the minor leagues. San Diego Padres infielder Marcano was permanently banned for placing unrelated bets with a legal sportsbook.
Marcano seems to be the first active major leaguer banned under the sport's gambling provision since 1924. Pete Rose accepted a lifetime ban in 1989 for betting on Cincinnati Reds games while managing the team.
