Motherhood, makeup and Zumba: the rehabilitation of one of Mexico's most dangerous prisons
"The Cereso prison complex has been entirely remodelled, with infrastructure renovations and a new leadership approach focused on rehabilitation and mental health for female inmates."
"Behind each prisoner lies a story shaped by poverty, exclusion, and precarious living conditions, highlighting the complex backgrounds of the women incarcerated."
"Pregnant women receive medical monitoring during their incarceration, ensuring that their health and the health of their unborn children are prioritized."
"The area designated for mothers and toddlers is designed to be playful and child-friendly, yet it remains within the confines of a penitentiary."
Cereso prison in Cancun, Quintana Roo, has transformed from a dangerous facility to a rehabilitative environment for female inmates. The prison now houses 284 women, with a structured daily routine that includes chores and workshops. Following government intervention, the prison's infrastructure was renovated, and mental health became a priority, with six psychologists available. Inmates, many with serious convictions, have access to psychosocial workshops to aid reintegration. Mothers can keep their children with them until age three, although the environment remains penitentiary in nature.
