Spain experienced major disruptions in its high-speed rail services due to serious acts of sabotage involving thefts of cable parts. The transport minister, Oscar Puente, reported that this incident impacted over 10,000 passengers, and ongoing investigations by the national police have been initiated. In addition to the thefts, a technical failure occurred when a train snagged the overhead power line, exacerbating the issue. By Monday morning, services were being restored, with expectations of returning to full capacity by the afternoon amidst previous disruptions related to an electricity outage.
The incidents are very serious, he said in a social media post, adding that the Spanish national police force was investigating.
These cable thefts were compounded by a technical issue, as a train snagged the overhead power line, dragging it and causing more disruption.
