Saints' Travis Etienne corrects how to say his name
"Growing up, it [was] Travis [Achane]. A-C-H-A-N-E. That's how they always said it, Travis [Achane]. But when I went to college, I kept telling them my name, like, every day, every day, every day. After like four weeks, they just couldn't get it. So I'm like, 'Man, it's [ETN]. How you see it is how you say it.'"
"I'm very much open to being Travis [Achane] again, just being myself. I don't have to correct people here on how to say my name each and every day. And I kind of love that. Just getting back to me."
Travis Etienne Jr., the New Orleans Saints running back from Jennings, Louisiana, clarified the correct pronunciation of his last name. Growing up, his name was pronounced 'Achane,' but when he enrolled at Clemson in 2017, he repeatedly corrected people who mispronounced it as 'ETN.' After four weeks of constant corrections, Etienne accepted the alternate pronunciation because it was easier for announcers and eliminated daily corrections. Upon signing a four-year, $52 million contract with the Saints after five seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Etienne expressed openness to returning to his original name pronunciation and heritage.
